![]() In his spare time, John also dabbles in app development. He also enjoys spending time with family, mountain biking, hiking, swimming, tinkering with electronics (especially computers) and loves following the Reds, the Bengals, and FC Cincinnati. When he’s not forecasting, John loves speaking to area school children about the weather. The CBM supersedes the AMS Seal of Approval and requires successful completion of a very comprehensive examination on theoretical meteorology, operational meteorology, forecasting, and general science. He is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM), an accreditation awarded by the American Meteorological Society. While in college, he helped create one of the largest storm chasing groups in the country. John is a graduate of Glen Este High School and went on to study weather at Valparaiso University in Ind., where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology. Following that broadcast, John received numerous letters and e-mails of appreciation from people whom he helped convince to leave the city. It wasn’t until after he went off air that he was able to then evacuate his wife and newborn son. Little did he know many years later that the dream would become a reality. He was promoted in March 2023 to become WJZ's first-ever Chief Meteorologist. John shared the details of a childhood aspiration, describing how he wanted to become a meteorologist and someday help save millions of people from a horrible hurricane. While in sixth grade at Brantner Elementary in Mt. John’s interest in weather started at a young age. While in New Orleans, he won numerous awards for his work, including an Associated Press award for Best Weathercast in Louisiana. John worked at WHBF-TV in Rock Island, Ill. Prior to coming to Local 12, John’s career took him all across the country, allowing him to experience every type of weather imaginable. To become a chief meteorologist, a person must typically graduate from high school and complete an undergraduate degree program. A Cincinnati native, John returned home to work for WKRC-TV in October of 2005. A team of scientists responsible for producing weather reports is led a chief meteorologist.
